What is tarmac?
Asphalt and Tarmac appear identical from the surface. However, they have significant differences.
The surfaces are often referred to in different ways. For example, tarmac asphalt and bitumen-tarmac. There are many things to take into consideration when choosing between asphalt or tarmac, regardless of what the surface is called.
Tarmacadam (also known as Tarmac) is a strong, durable surface. Tarmac is made by coating crushed stone with tar. Tarmac is strong and water resistant. It provides good grip, as well as a beautiful finish. Tarmac driveways are where it is most common.
Today, tarmac is almost completely replaced by bitmac. This makes it less likely that petrol or diesel accidentally spills on to the asphalt.
Bitumen is used in the manufacture of bitmac. The result is a surface that looks more like asphalt. The difference between bitumen or asphalt is the higher content of filler and sand in bitmac.
Asphalt is a mixture of more dense aggregates and bitumen. A surface created by mixing a specific blend of aggregates with bitumen to bind them.
Asphalt is a popular road surface because it can be used to resurface large areas at a low cost. For smaller surfaces, however, asphalt can be costly. Asphalt tarmac and asphalt are sometimes interchangeable.
Asphalt is more durable than tarmac, but asphalt is less resistant to constant scuffing from car tires.
This is a significant difference when comparing bitmac and asphalt surfacing. Asphalt is more resilient to extreme weather and requires less maintenance. This is why asphalt is the better choice than tarmac.
Another reason asphalt is preferred over tarmac? Asphalts are much more gentle on the environment. Asphalt can be easily recycled after it ages and reused elsewhere. While it is called asphalt driveway, it could actually be asphalt concrete. This is an entirely different type.
Asphalt concrete is a mixture asphaltic cement with sand and/or grit that provides a hard wearing, long-lasting surface. These surfaces can be much more costly than asphalt and tarmac and are also harder to fix. Additionally, asphalt concrete can be more easily damaged by fluctuations in temperatures.
